Strike by 108 ambulance workers affects services in Punjab

The strike by workers of emergency ambulance service, 108, on Monday affected the emergency health services in the state. However, the staff resumed work in the evening.

Throughout the state, patients and their attendants faced inconvenience as the paramedical staff of the '108' ambulance service suspended work since Sunday evening following a tiff with the management of the private company operating the service.

Ambulance drivers, pharmacists and other staff, who struck work to demand a salary hike and revocation of suspension of 15 of their colleagues, resumed work only around 4pm after the intervention of the health officials.

Ambulance services across the State are likely to be affected as drivers and paramedical staff of the 108 services launched a strike on Friday night. The government and the private agency running the service, however, claimed to have made alternative arrangements.

As many as 517 ambulances are managed by around 2,400 drivers and paramedical staff in the State. The drivers and paramedical staff working with 108 ambulance service decided to go on strike angered by the government’s “indifference” to their demands.

R. Sridhar, State president, Karnataka Rajya Arogya Kavacha 108 Naukara Sangha, said that 2,400 people across the State were participating in the strike. However, officials from GVK EMRI, the private agency that runs the ambulance service claimed that only a small number of people were taking part in the strike and the services remained unaffected. The sangha has sought termination of contract with GVK EMRI and accused the agency of harassing drivers and the paramedical staff. They also urged the government to increase the salaries of drivers and the paramedical staff to at least Rs. 15,000 a month.

Meanwhile, a press release from GVK EMRI termed the demands “baseless” and “unrealistic”. “We have made back-up plans to run ambulance with the support of government agencies so that the people do not suffer,” it said.

Arrogant activities of the management (GVK-EMRI), Many untold miseries were suffered by our union workers who were involved in welfare of union activities. The workers involved in welfare activities of union were dismissed, saying one reason or other. When questioned about this, In the name of enquiry, they were pretending as though providing justice. When an arrangement was made in labour office for settlement through mediation process, they are not stretching out their hands or coming forward. Strike hits '108' ambulance services

The indefinite strike called by the contract employees of 108 Emergency Response Services from Friday, has widely hit the ambulance services across the state with more than 400 vehicles going off the road. Though, this is the official figure given by GVK (EMRI) Emergency Management and Research Institute, according to 108 contract employees union,  90 per cent of the total 750 vehicles were away from regular duties.

GVK-EMRI operates the service with 750 vehicles and 4,075 employees. The major demands of the striking employees include implementation of minimum wages and regular work hours.

“Our staff have been working on 12-hour basis for a salary ranging between Rs 7,000-8,000. We demand that the working hours be reduced to 8 hours and a salary of minimum Rs 15,000 be given,” Bhoopal, honorary president of the 108 services contract employees’ union said. He also alleged that the management has been harassing the workers and have also suspended or transferred many of their leaders.

“We submitted a representation to the government in February and again in March. We held relay hunger strike between June 1 and 10 and also informed the authorities about the indefinite strike if our demands are not met with. There was no response at all,” he said adding that the labour commissioner has also failed to keep the assurance he had given earlier.

According to him, 90 per cent of the total 4,075 staff are on strike and would continue the strike until their demands are met.
