Collector hears grievances of '108' ambulance workers

Members of the ‘108' ambulance workers' union (Tamil Nadu) submitted a memorandum to Collector U. Sagayam here on Thursday.
In their petition, a delegation of the forum listed out a number of grievances and urged the Collector to intervene and redress them. Of the 13 ambulance vans in Madurai, vital parts and gadgets such as tyres, wheelchair, siren, horn, battery, oxygen cylinder, air-conditioner unit among others required periodical maintenance in many. Despite repeated pleas to the authorities, they had not been carried out, posing severe hardship to the employees in discharging their duties.

There were discrepancies in working hours to the employees. Compensation must be given as per Minimum Wages Act. Though field staff worked beyond duty hours, they were not provided over-time wages. When employees worked on public holidays, double wage/salary was not paid. A matter in this regard is pending before the Labour officials, they pointed out.
The ‘108' ambulance service had been rendering yeomen service to the public. Every case was critical and had to be attended to in a swift manner. Hence, solutions for the grievances must be provided soon, he said.
The Collector, who heard the delegation's grievances, assured to look into them.
