The members of 108 Ambulance Thozhilalar Sangam staged a demonstration near Collector's office here on Wednesday.
The agitators demanded enhancement of basic infrastructural facilities in the vehicles and also ensure welfare of all the staffs – particularly, those handling the emergency vehicles round-the-clock.
There were aplenty of anomaly in pay structure, they claimed and hence demanded uniform scale.
The emergency equipment/kit in many of the ambulances was not functioning. In public interest, the officers' should maintain the gadgets.
The demonstrators alleged that some of the senior officers indulged in removal of the field staffs from service on some pretext or the other. Such anti-labour attitude should be dropped and those suspended or terminated from work should be reinstated without any discontinuity in service immediately.
The members also pointed out the humiliation and harassment meted out to some of their colleagues who found fault with the administration. They claimed that some officers' forced the staffs, on selective basis, to work double shifts (24 hours) under some guise or the other.
Any failure to obey the diktats meant suspension and to get it revoked, the staffs had to run from pillar to post.
For many staffs, when the salaries were just Rs 6000-Rs 7000, it was tough to make both ends meet and they expressed dissatisfaction.
The demonstration was led by the district president Sundar in the presence of the state executive committee member Marichami, the Madurai district secretary Manicka Raj, the Theni district secretary Jayapandi and the legal advisor T. Sivakumar.
