108 ambulance staff stages dharna

Services of ‘108 Ambulances' were affected in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district with employees resorting to strike for the past few days. The staff, led by AITUC, staged a dharna in front of the Collector's office on Wednesday, urging to consider their demands.

More than 125 workers working in the emergency service took out a rally on the main road and reached the Collectorate. Later, they staged a sit-in in front of the office demanding that the government take over the maintenance of ‘108 Services', provide job protection and pay salaries every month.

The AITUC leaders said that patients, particularly villagers were suffering a lot due to the negligence of ‘108 ambulances' by the government. Some private ambulances were collecting hefty charges to shift patients from rural areas to hospitals, they said.

The employees said that emergency staff used to render round-the-clock services with humanity.
But, the ambulances have been off roads for a few days as the staff were not getting salaries and due to dearth of funds for maintenance of the vehicles.
